Collaborative and Cooperative Learning FULL
Monday January 27, 2025 8:40am - 9:40am CST
The objectives of this presentation would be teamwork and critical thinking with decision making. I think these two also apply to our school district initiative. I would like to do a presentation to review what exactly collaborative and cooperative learning is. Afterwards, I would like the audience to brainstorm ideas, in groups, that they can incorporate into different subject classes that are collaborative and cooperative. Then, we can share those ideas. I think it would also be fun, if time allows, to practice a strategy and get feedback on what works and what is more of a struggle.

Suicide Bereavement & Support FULL
Monday January 27, 2025 8:40am - 9:40am CST
Sharing information and resources in a presentation-style format from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s virtual Suicide Bereavement Clinical Training. From the AFSP site:
The suicide of a loved one can have a profound and sometimes devastating impact on those left behind, called suicide survivors. Bereavement after suicide may entail high levels of disorientation, guilt, regret, anger, shame, and trauma. Survivors sometimes also find their relationships with other people changed, as they struggle with the social stigma often placed on suicide, and the altered family relationships that have been changed by the feelings of guilt, blame, and failure that suicide may engender. Survivors may also be at risk for elevated rates of complicated grief and future suicidality themselves. All of this makes surviving the suicide of a loved one a potentially life-transforming ordeal that requires a level of support that goes beyond traditional grief counseling in order to help survivors cope with the tragic loss.
Topics will include:
• The psychological impact of suicide on survivors and common themes in the bereavement of survivors
• The impact of suicide on family functioning
• What research with survivors tells us is needed
• The tasks of loss integration and recovery for survivors
• Postvention options for survivors
The district’s latest strategic plan highlights the importance of mental health support and awareness for our students and staff. Grief experienced from a suicide has been, and will continue to be, an unfortunate reality for some of our students and their families, and our staff. For those who have experienced it or may experience it at some point, suicide bereavement will have a significant impact on their mental health, and on, the school performance (attendance, academics, emotional/behavioral regulation) of our students.

Monday January 27, 2025 9:50am - 10:50am CST
This year Yost kindergarten teachers piloted a program where students were not initially assigned a teacher. Students started the year with a “Homeroom” teacher and would rotate through all teachers during the frist 13 days of school. Not only did students get to be with other teachers but students also got to switch and be with other students. The purpose of this was to see how different personalities, behaviors and needs would work together. During these first 13 days we assessed, observed and taught students. Once the pilot was over we looked at data and compared notes. We then created final classes based off of our data.

Speaking and Listening Strategies Across the Curriculum FULL
Monday January 27, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm CST
Speaking and Listening Across the Curriculum” was initially designed as a response to our world post COVID-19 – students had a harder time communicating face to face and engaging in conversation or just basic interaction with one another. As World Language teachers, that’s what defines so much of our classroom – getting students to communicate (but with the added challenge of another language). With this as a background, Aki and I put together a presentation of some activities and strategies that we have used in our World Language classrooms that would also be helpful to other content areas to get students engaged in the material and also learning the life-long skill of communication. It’s our way of “tricking” students into participating. Although we are both World Language teachers, our presentation is designed to reach teachers across all content areas and has ideas that can be easily adapted for pretty much anyone! This directly relates to PLC Question #2: How will we know if they learn it?
